College of Social Science and the Humanities

The community of the College of Social Sciences and the Humanities understand that education may be wasteful when the goal is only to increase the relative number of people with certain level of qualification. Looking beyond gains in the mere increasing of the educated mass in the country, we believe that the education that is given in higher education institutions like that of the University of Gondar should be geared to producing qualified people who can meaningfully assist the development goals which this nation has long aspired to achieve. Education should be geared to producing more educated people who can add the value of improved health, more effective participation in politics, and personal fulfillment as additional dimensions of benefit for the whole nation at large. With the training we provide for our students here at the College, we wish to help our graduates to achieve higher earnings, we wish and plan to open career opportunities for our students, contribute to building a society of improved health and economic status, we plan and gear our training schemes so that graduates can enjoy increased stake and participation in the country’s social political and economic activities

News

News The transition that Gondar College of Medical Sciences made to become Gondar University College in the spring of 2003 was another landmark heralding the inevitable establishment of the Faculty. As a result, in 2003 E.C. set in the former campus of Lideta along with the Faculty of Business and Economics, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Humanities immediately began as a fully fledged faculty with five departments, namely English Language and Literature, Geography and Environmental Studies, Psychology, and Sociology. The expansion continued and in 1997 E.C. Department of Social Anthropology and in 1999 E.C. Department of Development and Environmental Management Studies (DEMS) came to be the successive additions to the list of departments in the College. Since then we have been able to institute five departments, namely the Department of Population studies, Department of Social works, Department of History, Department of Amharic language and Department of Gender and Development as well as attaining College status in 2013.
