Abstract:
Active learning method is the new approach to modern education in which students are
actively engage in instructional activities and it is the most important task facing for any
education organization. Therefore, the general purpose of this study was to assess the
implementation of active learning method in Secondary Schools of Metema Town
Administration. Descriptive survey research design with mixed approach was employed.
From the total of 1009 population, 349 sample participants were selected from 3 secondary
schools through comprehensive sampling for principals and supervisors, stratified random
sampling and simple random sampling for students, and purposive sampling for teachers. The
relevant data were collected through questionnaire, interview, and FGD. The quantitative
data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard
deviation), whereas the qualitative data were analyzed through verbal narration. Based on
the analysis, the study revealed that the actual practice of active learning method did not
done in a successful manner since input and process of instruction were in poor excellence
condition. It was also found that teachers have not the expected function to implement AL
method because of their own negative factors such as having lack of AL pedagogical skill,
having lack of commitment, have not take in-service training, lack of cooperation in among
teachers and students in classroom activities. Furthermore, the study revealed that students
related factors as well as inadequate and improper use of instructional inputs are the other
imperative challenges of AL implementation in secondary schools. Hence, some
recommendations were forwarded as a solution for the identified problem
