Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to assess the implimentation and Challenges of mentoring
CPD in Chilga woreda. To achieve this purpose five basic research questions were formulated and
descriptive survey method was used. The populations for study were 11 clusters and 33 primary
schools in the woreda. From those five clusters and five schools were selected by simple random
sampling technique more specifically by lottery method. In those five schools there were 256
mentees and 52 mentors were present. Out of those 256 mentees and 52 mentors 85 mentees and
30 mentors were selected respectively by simple random sampling technique more specifically by
lottery method. There are five principle and five supervisors in the five schools and five principals
and five supervisors were selected purposively, totally 125 sample size were selected in the study.
Questionnaire and document analysis were employed for data collection. Quantitative data were
organized, tabulated and analyzed by using percentage, mean, and grand mean, and chisquare(x
2
) test. Qualitative data were organized, and described as stated by respondents. The main
findings of the study were: field of specialization, sex and grade levels at which mentor and
mentee match were not considered during mentor-mentees matching. Supports /assistance of
mentors to mentees were not satisfactory. Attitude of mentors were found to be encouraging even
though they were affected by the lack of skill and knowledge on mentoring, lack of support for
mentors and lack of interest by mentees. The skills of mentors’ activities were poor in supporting
mentees to set goals, role modeling, class room observation and supply of feedback. Among the
challenges mentoring practice were lack of competence by mentors, lack of support, and
attitudinal problems of mentees.
Major recommendations were given supply of training mentors and
provision of resource materials on mentoring techniques to schools, and developing and enacting structure of responsibility mentoring of CPD.
