Abstract:
This paper tried to assess the factors that affect teacher’s participation in decision making in
case of Bahir dar secondary and preparatory schools. Various literature findings show that
sharing decision making is central to all organizational activities because it has more positive
outcomes for teachers’ motivation to work. In order to achieve the above objective different data
collection methods including questionnaire, interview and focus group discussion were
conducted. Therefore, this paper examines the factors that affect teachers participation in
decision making, with demographic variables specifically sex, year of services and educational
qualification. In addition, the study investigates the practices of teacher’s participation in
decision making in the selected schools. Descriptive research design was implemented in which
quantitative data were collected with self-developed instruments. In this study 227 participants
were involved from four secondary schools which were selected by applying simple random
sampling technique. The quantifiable data were analyzed by using the Statistical Package for
Social Science version 20, with statistical tools including independent sample t- test, mean,
standard deviation minimum and maximum value, charts and graphs. In general, the practice of
engaging teachers in decision making process was very low. There is no statistically significant
difference between male and female teachers’ participation in decision making. In respect to
educational status, master holder teachers are greater in participation in decision making than
degree holder teachers. There is a significant variation in teachers’ participation in decision
making across years of services or experiences. This study also revealed that there is a positive
relationship among the teachers participation in decision making, Lastly, give more chance for
teachers to participate in decision making have been recommended.
