Abstract:
The study targeted at difficulties of English pronunciation that EFL learners experiencing from
the English foreign language classrooms and exposed these difficulties in oral communication
contexts. The objective of the study is to investigate students’ pronunciation difficulties in EFL
classroom. The design and method of the present study is descriptive research survey and mixed
method respectively. Participants of the study were 30 grade 12 students. The data collection
instruments employed in this study were audio stimuli and reading aloud. To this end, the result
of the study employed two distinct but related approaches: phonemic measure test and speech
perception test. The phonemic measure tests that investigated the subjects’ ability of silent letters
and linguistic factors like generalization of ‘ed’ forms of the regular past tense. The result
showed that phonemic measure is problem areas still restricts grade 12students’ successful
utterance of English words. The speech perception test result also showed that not all novel
sounds presented equal amount of perception difficulty for the subjects with interdental
fricatives, word stress and sentence stress are being difficulty areas. Based on the above results
the researcher recommends focusing on selected sounds; help the students discriminate sounds,
use of phonetic transcript, comparison between L1and L2, use minimal pair drills, use imitation
and repeat ion, get the student familiar why and how silent letters should be treated at different
position in a word. Because one of the important parts of foreign language teaching and
learning is English pronunciation because it impacts learners' communicative competence and
performance. Lack of pronunciation skills reduces learners’ self-confidence and limits their
social interactions. EFL teachers can help their learners obtain the necessary skills of
pronunciation they need for effective communication. In this paper, the researchers define the
term pronunciation, explain the importance of pronunciation, declare the goals of English
pronunciation, state the aspects of English pronunciation, elaborate the reason of integrating
pronunciation in EFL classes, express techniques for teaching English pronunciation, and
mention implications for the learning and teaching of English pronunciation. The review of
literature indicates that EFL teachers play a vital role in improving the learners’ pronunciation skill.
