Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to explore teachers’practices and challenges in class
room teaching paragraph writing skills in EFL classes English. The studywas carried out
in Asko secondary school grade 9 students in focus. Descriptive research design was
employed to address the problem. To conduct the study, fourEnglish teachers were
chosen by compressive sampling along with 80 students who were selected through
randomsampling technique. In order to achieve the objectives, the study employed four
data gatheringtools: document analysis, open ended questionnaire, interview and
classroom observation. Based on this the data were qualitative analysis using description
and narration. All data collected using different tools were analyzed qualitatively. The
finding of the teacher practices showed that the major paragraph writing problems
students’encounter. The finding of the study also revealed that are problem of
organization,unity, adequacy, grammar, punctuation, capitalization and spelling. In
addition, factors thatwere affecting students’ paragraph writing were divided into
students’ related factors like lackof knowledge of strategic use, students’ writing
apprehension, shortage of vocabulary and lackof regular practice, and teachers’ related
factors such as teachers’ ways of giving feedback.Therefore, since paragraph writing is a
skill that could be improved through sufficientpracticing, Asko secondary school students
should have been given chance of learning andpracticing features of good paragraph to
effectively use them to write a paragraph.
