Abstract
Culture is a very broad term that bothers many scholars and authors to arrive at a common
specified definition. However, it is studied in collaboration with different definitions from different
scholars. This study aims in studying the cultural aspects of two novels (“Land of the Yellow Bull”
and “Things Fall Apart”) in a comparative way. The study examined the cultures depicted in the
novels concerning their similarities and differences. In doing this, textual analysis is the core
method. Through the textual analysis, classic type of comparative analysis is applied. Based on
the analysis, in the fourth chapter, the researcher found that the two novels share a similar culture
in depth while there is a slight difference between them. As scholars believed in the common
thematic sensibilities of African novels, this research tried to examine this and other additional
research problems. The same to this that people thought that Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart
is written supporting the traditional Igbos culture. But in contrary, it is that the author is criticizing
it and showed the negative impact of the traditional bad culture of the society so this thesis aimed
to show this premises in a scholarly way. In addition to this, this research tried to fulfill the
research objectives which are aimed to make a comparison between the two novels “Land of the
Yellow Bull” and “Things Fall Apart” based on their depicted cultural elements. Within this main
objective, which elements of cultures portrayed, how are these cultures stated in the novels, and
how are they expressed are given response and analysis. The extracts are discussed by using point
by point mechanism of textual analysis. Finally, as the extracts and other selected texts and figures
show depending on the motive of the authors intention they appreciate and criticized their works
through the mind of the characters in the novels. In addition to this both novels show that they
share a common cultural practices and performances.
