Abstract:
The study sought to examine youth unemployment and its implications for security; the case of
Gondar city administration. The study sought the current situation of unemployment rate among
youths in Gondar city administration. It was guided by the following objectives: to identify causes
of youth unemployment, factors influencing youth unemployment, effects of youth unemployment
on security and approaches that have been employed by responsible organs (either leaders or any
initiatives) of city administrations on youth unemployment and its implications for security in the
case of Gondar city administration. Qualitative research design was used and the target
population was leaders drawn from the youth, police, government officials, national government
administration officers & civilians in Gondar city administration. The study utilized both primary
and secondary data. The researcher used questionnaires for the majority of leaders, interviews for
key informants and focused group discussion for the youth leaders. Data was analyzed & used
quantitative approaches. The results obtained from the model were presented in tables, charts and
graphs to aid in interpretation and ease with which the inferential statistics was drawn. The study
has argued that youth unemployment in Gondar city administration has been securitized with a
majority of leaders and civilians terming unemployed youth as a threat to security.
