Abstract:
Background: Globally, cervical cancer is one of the most common forms of carcinoma
among women, leading high morbidity and mortality. Ethiopia launched the human papilloma
vaccination
for the first time, with the support of the Global Alliance for Vaccine and
Immunization in 2018. However, there is little evidence on uptake of Human Papilloma Virus
(HPV)
vaccine
among
adolescent
girls.
Even
the
existing
one
is
institutional
based
study,
which
is not
generalizing
adolescent
population.
Objective:
To
assess
the
uptake
of
HPV
vaccine
and
its
associated
factors
among
adolescent
girls
in
Gambella
town, Southwest
Ethiopia
2022.
Methods:
A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from May 28, 2022 to
July, 4, 2022 in Gambella town, Southwest Ethiopia. A cluster random sampling technique
was used to select 882 study participants. An interviewer administered and pretested questionnaires
were
used to collect the data. The data was collected by 4 female diploma nurses
and 1 female degree-holder nurse supervisor. The collected data was entered in to Epi-data
version 4.6, and exported to STATA version 16 for cleaning, coding and analysis. Bi-nary
logistic regression model was used to test association between independent and dependent
variables. Variables with a p-value <0.05 in the multivariable logistic regression were considered
as
a statistically
significant
factor
for
uptake
of HPV
vaccination.
Results:
A total of 825 adolescent girls participated in this study with 93.5% of response
rate.Among participants,396(48%)(95%CI,44.6%-51.4%) have been vaccinated for HPV.The
variable such as ever heard about HPV vaccine(AOR=2.5,95%CI,1.23-5.08),knowledge of
infection,(AOR=3.62,95%CI,2.17-6.02),knowledge of HPV vaccine,(AOR=5.54,95%CI,
3.28-9.36) and attitude toward HPV vaccine (AOR=2.74,95%,CI,1.88-3.98) were significantly
associated
with
uptake
of HPV
vaccine.
Conclusion
and recommendation. In the current study, the uptake of HPV vaccination is
found to low.Ever heard about HPV vaccine, knowledge of HPV infection, knowledge of
HPV vaccine and attitude toward HPV vaccine were significantly associated with uptake of
HPV vaccination. Therefore, community health education on HPV infection and vaccine are
necessary to increase knowledge of HPV vaccine, to build positive attitude and to improve
uptake of HPV vaccination.
