Abstract:
Unemployment is one of the major challenges facing Ethiopia today, coupled with population
growth and increased poverty. In Ethiopia because of cultural bias, un-participatory policies
and lack of awareness, many women continued to be burdened with back-breaking domestic
chores and heavy agricultural activities for long periods of time in the past. Women in Ethiopia
have not been exposed to the economic opportunities that would enable them participate in
alternative income-generating activities.[9] Now a days unemployment especially women and
youth unemployment continue to be serious problems despite there is some improvements within
recent years. The main objective of this study is to examine causes and effects of women
unemployment in Gondar city, Amhara region, northwest Ethiopia. Quantitative cross-section
study was employed among Gondar city women. 421 respondents were selected by using random
sampling technique. To carry out this study, primary and secondary data sources were utilized.
Pretested structured questionnaire were used as the data gathering instruments for quantitative
and qualitative data respectively. In addition binary logistic regression model used for IBM
SPSS version 20 software for data analysis. In view of that family size, education status, age,
lack of credit services and experiencing insult were found to be the significant cause of women’s
employment status at p value <0.05. Moreover, financial or budget constraints, credits that need
to be returned, depression or feeling unemployed and alcohol or any addiction experience were
found to be the consequence of women unemployment in the study area.
