Abstract:
The objective of this study was to assessing the causes and effects of road traffic accidents its
interventions in Mortina Jiru Woreda ,North Shoa Zone of the ANRS, The researcher used
descriptive and explanatory approach. However, for the purpose of this study, two sample
Sites (Kebels) were selected purposively, the reason was that, these two constitutes are
relatively large number of house holder as compared to the rest kebeles. Taking more than
two sites could be unmanageable by the researcher. The total household house holders were,
337, out of which 85(25%) of house holders were selected by using simple random sampling
technique. In addition, 7 interviewees and 11 FGD participants were selected using
purposive sampling method.. Therefore, a total of 103 key participants were actively engaged
in conducting this study. Taking this research objective in mind, the study used both primary
and secondary data sources to get consolidated data so as to reach on concrete findings. As
far as the data collection tools are concerned, questionnaires, semi-structured interviews,
focus group discussions were employed to gather the primary data. Finally, the collected
data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Questionnaires, which contained 22
questions were prepared and distributed for selected sample (house holder). Then,
descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentage, mean and average mean were
employed to analyzing the quantitative data, with SPSS. The findings revealed that
combination of factors were enormously contributed to the road traffic accident (RTAs), such
as road factors, human factors, road management factors, drivers factors, vehicles factors
In conclusion, the researcher recommended in reducing the road traffic accidents level in
Mortina Jiru woreda by providing education and training to all segment of all road users
about road safety, and by improving road safety, licenses awarding system
