Abstract:
This study investigated the Socio-cultural, Economic, Environmental and security impacts of Somalia
refugees on the host communities in case study of Dolo Ado district, in Somali National Regional state.
As a result, the study was used the qualitative research approach. To this end, the study used both
primary and secondary sources of data. Primary data were collected by interviewing of key informants
from refugees, host communities and government officials. In addition, the secondary data was
obtained from published materials, journals and government and NGO reports in order to address the
basic objectives of the study. The study used purposive sampling techniques for collecting the relevant
data. So that presence of refugees in the study area has brought many impacts on the local community.
The finding of this study showed that the arrival of refugees has both positive and negative impacts on
the host community. The study showed that the presence of refugees have some positive impacts in the
area for instance the access of market for the local community, created the job opportunities, and the
access to get social services. On the contrary, the presence of the refugees in the area has a negative
impacts on the environment such as soil degradation, water pollution, illegal hunting, deforestation,
besides, the arrival of refugees have impacts on the Security of the area such as the fear of Al-shebaba,
disputes, illegal possession of firearms, as well as the socio-cultural impacts of refugees on the host
community such as indirect prostitution, sexual abuse, and robberies, Finally, Based on the finding, the
study concluded that the negative impacts of refugees on the host community are more severe than the
positive impacts, this may needs a careful attention of the government, humanitarian organizations and
the hosting communities.
