Abstract:
This thesis seeks to assess the challenges of the right to live and work on safe and healthy
environment of workers in Oromia regional state of Ethiopia: particularly the case of Di-Yuan
ceramic manufacturing industry of in eastern industrial park of Dukem town The objective of
this thesis is to identify and explain the challenges of workers right on the employment security
working hours and related., examine the current practice of PPE and the awareness on both
employers and employees on safe and healthy environment , evaluate the issue of directives,
auditing, inspection ,enforcement of the employers obligation and the bargaining for the
respection of right by labor offices and trade union before the escalation of dispute. For the
sake of achieving the objectives of the study, quantitative survey data collected by questionnaires
with likert scale and interviews were analyzed and rated. The analyzed quantitative and
qualitative data were mixed to analyze and interpret by using the descriptive strategy of the
mixed approach. The information obtained through self administered questionnaire from the
sample of 75 respondents and face- to –face interviews with respondents of the ceramic industry
management body and the bureau of labor and social affair was conducted on the ceramic
manufacturing industry under investigation. The results from both analyses was mixed and
analyzed in order to explain or better understand the mixed methods and answer the research
questions. The respondents of the ceramic industry and the bureau of labor and social affairs
were selected using purposive and random sampling techniques. Besides that, the interview
questions were analyzed using descriptive narration through concurrent triangulation strategy.
The empirical study extracted major factors that have contributed to the violations of the rights
of ceramic industry and the findings showed: employment insecurity(is at risk, occupational
health, safety and welfare at danger , release of untreated dangerous chemicals and nano dust
particles to the environ., lack of freedom to be organized and actively participate in trade unions
&lack of implementation and incompatibility with governmental regulations and laws were the
findings of the study it further indicated the progress and improved in the working hours and in
overtime. Based on the findings, the recommendations: improve employment security, assign
P.P.E officer, purchase P.P.E and replace the olds, fix filter bag(wet scrubber)the nano dust
particles, improve wages, and recognize trade unions besides that the ceramic management
bodies and the Dukem bureau of labor and affair must work collaboratively. Lastly the bureau of
labor and social must organize workshops and training on employment security and welfare
issues periodically.
