Abstract:
This qualitative study explored the congruence of the counseling profession with mental health
professionals in Ethiopia. After 6 days of training on counseling professional orientation and
basic techniques, 26 mental health practitioners or educators from various helping professions
were asked a series of questions to explore their reactions to counseling. A systematic content
analysis of their survey and focus group responses yielded six key areas of attention. The
results revealed a need for more local education and training in mental health services to better
serve this unique and developing country.
