Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to find out factors affecting students’ academic performance at Gina
-Ager cluster of primary schools of Asagirt woreda, North shewa Zone of Amhara Region.
Education is the foundation of means of improving the welfare of individuals, economic growth
and social development. The pushing factors for researcher to study this research were serious
problems seen the teaching learning process at Gina-Ager primary school as wereda educational
report in 2009E.C and increasing the number of dropout and repetition at grade ninth after they
have seen mid exam result .The objective of the study was to investigate the factors influencing
student’s academic performance in Asagirt Woreda at Gina-Ager cluster primary schools. To
conduct this study, descriptive survey design was used to describe existing phenomena. To do this
study, both primary and secondary data sources were used. 5 primary schools in the target cluster
were selected by using purposive sampling technique, and from the total of 104 teachers and 2,060
students in the target cluster schools, 53 teachers and 208 students were selected (to fill in the
questionnaire) by using simple random sampling technique. The cluster supervisor and all the five
target schools’ 5 principals (for interviewing) were selected using comprehensive sampling
technique whereas the PTA chair persons were selected using purposive sampling technique to
conduct focus group discussion. The study found that the practices and commitments of school
leaders and teachers in building conducive school environment and participatory work culture
supportive of students’ academic achievements is not that much encouraging which needs due
attention. Thus, the following recommendations were forwarded: woreda education officials ,
cluster supervisor and school principals shall make the school to have conducive in physical,
human and financial resources and shall create opportunities to teachers and students to have
active participant in school activities by providing moral and incentives. And also creating
opportunities to teachers to have short term school training to in rich their knowledge ,skills and
attitudes in increasing school cooperative learning cultures, procedures ,and objectives so as to
enhance student achievements has paramount importance.
