Abstract
The study set out to assess the impact of YBP-ES interventions to bring about change on the
livelihoods of the beneficiaries to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience in the study area.
Primary and secondary data sources were used for this study. The primary data were collected
from 125 project participant and 129 non-participants a total of 254 sample respondents. Simple
random sampling technique was used to collect primary data. The sample respondents were
drawn proportionally from the two project sites. Descriptive analysis like use of mean, standard
deviation, t-values, and percentages were used to interpret, summarize, and conclude the result.
Propensity Score Matching (PSM) and average Treatment Effect on the treated (ATT) has been
employed to extensively assess the impact of participation in the ES-intervention on average
monthly income, household consumption expenditures, asset creation, Access to credit and
savings of participant respondents. The result of descriptive statistics revealed that there was
significant mean and proportional difference between participant households and their nonparticipant counter parts in terms of Age of household head, Family size, numbers of
dependents, Average costs of children education, Average costs of household health and primary
education attendance. The logistic regression estimation of Propensity Score Matching (PSM)
using pscore command in stata to determine pscore values of respondents and to identify the
common support region. The PSM result shows that participation in the livelihood project had
brought a significant impact on the household livelihoods which is explained by four outcome
variables (the mean Income difference between participant and non-participant households is
ETB 2030, saving difference is ETB 3402, Asset holding difference is ETB 10,152.5 and
participant households had about 74.5% more accessed to credit than non-counter parts) at 1%
probability level while it had insignificant impact on average consumption expenditure.
Therefore, the YBP-ES intervention had a positive impact on the beneficiary households’
livelihoods this shows that the project has successfully implemented in the study area.
Accordingly, based on the project’s implementation strategies the government and policy makers
would have focused on to reach on other areas.
