ABSTRACT
Youth unemployment in Ethiopia in general and in Woreta town in particular is a seriousproblem. In
light of this problem, this study is conducted on identifying the determinants of youth unemployment in
the study area. The primary data source for this research was the Woreta town youth individuals and
the data were collected by survey on 221 youth households. Descriptive statistics and economic models
were employed for data analysis to satisfy the stated objectives.Logistic regression model was employed
to identify the determinants of youth unemployment. A total of eight explanatory variables were
included in the model, of which five variables were found to be significant determinants of youth
unemployment. The multivariate analysis indicated that, rural-urban migration status, household
income, education, investment and job opportunity significantly determine youth unemployment in
Woreta town whereas, and social network density and corruptions were found insignificant in the
study area. Based on the results of the study, empower females during employment and other
participation, creating more job opportunities, expansion of investment sectors, achieving quality
education for all young people, strengthen income generating activities, address the problems of
migrants and give awareness on youth population not to be job seekers rather than job creators were
suggested as recommendations.
