Abstract:
Physical education is defined as a learning process designed to foster the development of motor
skills, health related fitness, knowledge and attitudes relative to physical education
through a series of carefully planned and conducted experiences however the failure to create an
environment that promotes to maintain learning and their participation in sportand physical activi
ty is another challenge that faces the teaching of physical education in schools. These include lack
of school sporting facilities and equipment’s that student’s face. So, the purpose of the study is to
identify the challenges and students perception towards physical education in Gondar zuria
Woreda High Schools. The researcher used a quantitative and qualitative research method. The
data collected through questionnaire was by establishing close and open ended questions.
Respondents for questionnaire were selected by a method using simple random sampling
technique and for interview samples are chosen by purposive sampling technique. The data was
analyzed by using frequency and percentage using Statistical Packages for Social Science SPSS.
The findings of the study revealed that students have low intensions to attend physical education
instruction in the schools without the regardless of sex discrimination. Lack of suitable sport play
grounds, in schools accepting physical education as a subject and consider it significant is
challenging, physical education time allotted in the school and weather condition in practical
implementation of physical education in regular class program were found the major challenges
for physical education in the schools. Finally, recommendations were forwarded based on the
major findings so as to minimize problems encountered and maximize the implementation of
interactive learning of physical education.
