Abstract:
Team dynamics is one of the determinant factors of athletic performance. It is defined as the strength of bonds between group members, the unity of a group, the feeling of attraction between group members, and the degree to which members concentrate their efforts to achieve group goals. The definition shows that team dynamics has a great importance in the performance of teams. The main emphasis of the present study is assessing the effect of team dynamics on sport performance. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the relationship between team dynamics/team cohesion and team performance in the case of Ambasel Kenema and Hayik Kenema football clubs who are playing in the Amhara League of Ethiopia in 2015EC. The study would be intended to establish the differences in social and task dynamics between the two teams. Teams’ dynamics, win-loss records, the extent of team dynamics in predicting team performance, and the degree of social and task dynamics within the team would be also addressed. The study would be employed a descriptive survey research design. The sample was comprised 50 (fifty) players, 2(Two) coaches, and 2 (two) team leaders derived from Ambasel Kenema and Hayk Kenema football teams in the 2015 Amhara League season. A Comprehensive sampling technique would be used, as all of players, coaches, and team leaders of both teams included in the study as samples, to select respondents. All 50 (fifty) players, (25 from each club) and 2 (Two) coaches, (2) from each (1 head coach), (2) team leaders, (1 from each club), were included. The players were fill the Group Environment Questionnaire (Individual Attraction to Group - Task: ATG-T; Individual Attraction to Group - Social: ATG-S; Group Integration - Task: GI-T; Group Integration - Social: GI-S). Moreover, win/loss record of the teams were also be used to gather data about the win/loss average of teams. Face to face structured interview was also took place with two coaches, and two team leaders of the two teams. Data was analysed by using the statistical package for social science (SPSS version 20) and other data that doesn’t require statistical software was analysed and tabulated into simple frequencies and percentages and presented in the form of tables. As the overall score of team dynamics increased, overall score on team performance increased and vice versa. Besides, team dynamics significantly and positively predicted team performance However, only task dynamics predicted team performance while social dynamics didn’t predict team performance. Coaches need to educate and create awareness among their players on the importance and contribution of team dynamics to teams’ performance.
Key terms: team dynamics, team performance, individual attraction, group integration.
