Abstract:
This study was conducted to assess challenges of students with physical disability participation during physical education practical class in Dehana Woreda secondary schools.
Methods: Cross sectional survey method was employed. The population in the study 78 physical impaired students using simple random sampling method, 7 physical education teacher, 6 school principals, 1 cluster supervisor, and 5 woreda education officers, and was involved totally 97 participates are included in the study. The data obtained from quantitative data was analyzed using percentage, mean and standard deviations by using SPSS version 25. The data obtained through observations, FGD and interview was analyzing by using qualitative techniques through narration, explanations and triangulation method of data analysis and interpretation.
Result: The findings revealed that, the teachers did not consistently support learners with physical disabilities. Most of the participants reported in the FGD that there was not much of a role being played by parents in the education of physically challenged students in all sample schools. The need for increasing disability awareness was highlighted by many participants in the study, especially some of the parents and school administrators did not mention raising awareness among teachers.
Those 20(21.9%) of respondents strongly agreed and 44(48.3%) of them agreed, over all from 97 respondents 64(66.67%) of respondents showed that large class size affects the participation of physically disabled students in practical PE class and makes a challenge on PE teachers to give special support for disabled students and 47 (51.6%) of respondents strongly agreed and 10(10.9%) of respondents agreed about the effect of difficulties with transport to sport fields and play grounds. Similarly, in the ten item 56(61.5%) of respondents strongly agreed and 14(15%) of respondents agreed about the effect of poor facilities on the participation during physical education practical session of students with disability in the case of the selected secondary schools.
Recommendations: The school admin should create awareness among the school community and parents. The school has to make and build communication with all concerned stakeholders.
