Abstract:
Background: In many countries, rates of facility-based childbirth have increased
substantially in recent years. However, insufficient attention has been given the
acceptability and quality of maternal health services provided at facilities and,
consequently, maternal health outcomes have not improved as expected. Disrespect and
abuse during childbirth is increasingly being recognized as an indicator of overall poor
quality of care and as a key barrier to achieving improved maternal health outcomes and
mothers satisfaction, but little evidence exists to describe the scope and magnitude of
this problem particularly in urban areas in low-income countries. The aim of this study
was to assess women抯 satisfaction with delivery service and associated factors.
Methods: A Hospital based cross-sectional survey with an exit interview was conducted
in Gondar university referral hospital Gondar City Administration, Northwest Ethiopia,
from November1 to 31 /2018. Four hundred seventy-one postpartum mothers were
enrolled in the study. Data was checked, coded and entered to Epi-data and was exported
to SPSS version 20 for analysis. Multivariable and bi-variable logistic regression was
applied to identify the relative effect of each explanatory variable on the outcome
(satisfaction).
Results: The Mean (SD ) age of the respondents was 27.32 (SD 4.85) years with a
range of 15 and 39. This study revealed that the overall satisfaction with delivery service
was 21.2%(95% Cl 17.6,25.1). Urban dwellers (AOR=0.34; 95% CI 0.17, 0.68),
spontaneous vaginal delivery (AOR=0.28; 95% Cl:0.14,0.57) and mothers with children
age 12-24 months duration of birth spacing (AOR=0.22; 95%; Cl 0.08,0.55) were
inversely associated with women抯 satisfaction on childbirth care services, while, short
waiting time see the midwives or doctors (AOR=9.69; 95% Cl: 3.16,29.76) were
significantly associated with women抯 satisfaction on childbirth care services.
Conclusion: The overall satisfaction of mothers with labor and delivery care in Gondar
Referral Hospital was very low compared with other studies. Urban dwellers,
spontaneous vaginal delivery and mothers with children age 12-24 months duration of
birth spacing were inversely associated with women抯 satisfaction on delivery services,
while, spent short waiting time to seen the midwives or doctors were significantly
associated with women抯 satisfaction on delivery services.
