Abstract
The spleen is an important lymphatic organ in the human body. Currently, its anatomical variation
with immunological and hematological functions for its clinical significance gets due attention. The
aim of this study was to assess the anatomical variation of spleen in an adult human cadaver. The
present study was performed in 21 apparently normal adult human cadaveric spleens. The
morphological features of the spleen like its length, breadth, width and weight were measured. The
shape, notches, borders, surfaces and impressions on the spleens were observed in all formalin fixed
cadavers in Addis Ababa University, Bahir Dar University, Debre Markos University, University of
Gondar and Gamby Medical College. On average the length, breadth, width and weight of spleens
measured approximately 11.2cm, 6.6cm, 5cm and 147.76gm, respectively. Besides, various shapes
of spleens were detected of which triangular shape was dominant. Notches were identified in all its
borders. Unfortunately, accessory spleens situated at the hilum were not detected. Finally, the
anatomical variations on the shape, size, and notches of spleens are fundamentally important for
anatomists, surgeons and radiologist
