Abstract:
Abstract
Background: The internal iliac artery (IIA) originates from the common iliac artery on each side,
approximately at the level of the intervertebral disc between L5 and S1, and lays anteromedial to the
sacroiliac joint. The aim of the study is to assess the anatomical variations in branching patterns of IIA
Methods: The study was conducted in 40 pelvic halves of 20 cadaver of IIA. The origin of division,
branching pattern and origin of obturator artery (OA) were observed in all formalin fixed cadaver of
Gondar, Bahir Dar, Debre Markos, Addis Ababa University and Gamby Medical College of anatomy
department.
Result: The origins and branching patterns of IIA are variable. The most prevalent origin of IIA is
between L5 and S1. The branching type I, II, III and IV was rated as 58%, 18%, 23% and 3%,
respectively. The origin of OA from anterior division, common trunk of inferior gluteal and internal
pudendal arteries and posterior division was rated as 78%, 13% and 10%, respectively.
Conclusion: The study suggests the anatomical variation of internal iliac artery in origin, branching
patterns and origin of obturator artery. The finding will be helpful for anatomists, pelvic surgeon and
radiologis
