Abstract:
Defines solid waste (SW) as unwanted, discarded or discarded material that is not usable
by humans. These materials are non-liquid, non-hazardous, non-gaseous and include
organic (easily biodegradable) and inorganic (non-biological eg metals, plastics, bottles
and broken glass) materials. Furthermore, “solid waste is defined as material that no longer
has any valueto its original owner and is discarded.Major Components of Solid Waste
According to this author, organic waste (including kitchen waste and garden clippings),
paper, glass, metal andplastic, ash, dust and street sweepings can also form a significant
part of the waste in the city.MSWM) deals with the collection, transfer, treatment, recycling,
recovery and disposal of solid waste in cities. This study was conducted to assess the extent
of community participation in solid waste management (SWM) in the Gondar city
administration of the Amhara regional government. Therefore, a descriptive research
method was used to achieve the objectives. In the study, the researcher asks questions that
seem to assess the extent of community participation in the MSWM system in Gondar city.
Data was collected using interviews.A390 respondents were used in the study. Purposive
sampling techniques were used to obtain five representative samples. 390 respondents were
randomly selected from each kebele and from different families at the Kebele level. The
data collected was analyzed using SPSS software.Inaddition to being a large population
and commercial center in the city administration areas where the study was conducted, it
is known that the problem of waste management iswidespread and the types of waste to be
disposed of are a mixture of biodegradable and non- biodegradable waste.
The results of the study indicate that house managers collect solid waste in their homes and
use waste storage equipment and try to control waste. They realize that all types of waste
have the same characteristics. They do not understand the concept of community
participation; andtheir participation is low because they do not know that the community is
a key stakeholder, the community had a negative level of participation in any way and level
and their satisfactionwas low, so they should work on training and awareness activities to
increase their participation in SWM.
