CAUSES AND CONSEQUENCES OF RURAL-URBAN MIGRATIONIN IN ETHIOPIA, A CASE OF BAHIR DAR CITY ON DAGEMAWI MINLIKE AND ATI TEWDOSE SUB CITY OF AMHARA NATIONAL REGIONAL STATE

Abstract

This study has analyses the causes and consequences of rural-urban migration in the Ethiopian in a case of Bahir Dar city on Dagemawi Manlike and Ati Tewdose sub City of Amhara National Regional states. The aim of this study to analyses on the causes as well as consequences of rural-urban migration in the Ethiopian in a case of Bahir Dar city on Dagemawi Manlike and Ati Tewdose sub City of Amhara National Regional states In order to achieve the aim of the study, as ample of 1078 respondents were purposely selected form Bahir Dar city Dagemawi Manlike and Ati Tewdose sub City of Amhara National Regional state also data were generated through primary and secondary sources. This study indicted Rural-urban migration in Bahir Dar city on Dagemawi Manlike and Ati Tewdose sub City of Amhara National Regional states has different causal and consequences. This means, until the imbalance or disparity in socio-economic development between the rural and urban areas are removed, no amount of persuasion or force can put a stop to rural-urban migration and its’ multiplying effects in Bahir Dar City. Similarly the receiving area now experiences problems such as a shortage of housing, unemployment, increasing cost of living, lack of access to social services, the income from migration enables rural households to supplement poor harvests, service debts and diversify their livelihood. Migration, however, contributes to the spread of disease, as well as socio-culturally undesirable habits producing dysfunctional families and other societal ill.
