Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate cultural heritage conservation practice, challenge and
opportunity in Lake Ziway Island monasteries. The study used exploratory research design with
a qualitative research approach. The target of the study was purposively selected from the
culture & tourism office of Ziway dugda woreda and Arsi zone, conservation experts of Arsi zone
and ziway dugda woreda, monasteries clergy and local community from two Lake Ziway island
monasteries. Totally (20) individuals were purposively selected and participated in this study. To
gather appropriate data the study used both primary and secondary data sources. Primary data
were collected through interviews, FGD, whereas secondary data from document analyses.
Then, the collected qualitative data was analyzed using content analyses. Finally, the result of
the study indicates, cultural heritage conservation of Lake Ziway island monasteries are
practiced by local community and church leaders. By using protection methods of conservation.
The cultural heritage conservation challenges in Lake Ziway island monasteries are Lack of
Collaboration among the Stakeholders, Lack of Promotion and Well-organized Information,
natural and environmental challenges, lack of finance and Lack of focus for cultural heritage of
lake ziway island monasteries are the major conservation challenges. According to the results of
the study there are some Opportunities for Cultural Heritage Conservation those are the unique
location of the site and the local stake holders filings of ownership, the roles of museum in debre
tsion islands, tourism development and preservation for future.
