Abstract:
The objective of this study was to explore the types, factors and effects of deviant behaviors
among students of Angereb secondary school in Gondar city. Thus, adopting mixed approach,
specifically, sequential explanatory design, a total of 296(male=150 female=146) students
involved in the study to provide quantitative data. Moreover, the qualitative data were collected
from (11);6 discussants (one FGD) and 5 key informants. Quantitative data were collected
through pilot tested survey questionnaire whereas; the qualitative data were collected through
focus group discussion and key informant interview guides. The quantitative data were analyzed
using descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation) whereas the
qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Findings show that smoking (78%), fighting each
other (90%), truancy (79%), bullying (82%), being rude to teachers (70%), drinking alcohol
(70%), and disrespecting school authority (76%) as types of students’ deviant behaviors among
others. Moreover, findings show that low level of parental education (73%), frustration from
home or school (75%), negative effects of the mass media (71%), family poverty (58%) andlack
of reinforcement for good behavior (74%)as the socio-cultural factors of students’ deviant
behaviors. Feelings of fear, anger, sadness, guilt and mistrust (79%), problems of paying
attention, concentrating and learning(80%), poor school attendance (78%), behavioral disorders
(72%), academic failure (86%) and poor interpersonal relationships (76%) as the effects of
deviants behaviors on students. Finally, sociologists are recommended to enlighten teachers,
parents and the community on the causes of deviant behaviors among adolescents
