Abstract:
Internal displacement, which is the most serious humanitarian crisis Ethiopia, just like other
developing countries, faces problems associated with conflict induced displacement, of whom
IDW are the victims. Hence, the study explores the challenges of IDW in the Aburie
displacement camp in Kobo woreda. The specific objective of the research is to explore
economic, healthy, psychological and coping strategy and problems among IDW in Aburie
Displacement Camp, in Kobo woreda. To this end, the study employed qualitative approach with
a phenomenological study design. Eight participants selected purposively and the sample size
was determined based on data saturation principle. In-depth &key informant interview, and focus
group discussion was held with the IDW living in the camp and other key informant on the issue
in order to generate the data which is relevant to the study. The qualitative data was transcribed,
coded, categorized and analyzed thematically. According to the finding, the problems of IDW in
the Aburie Displacement Camp include: (1) loss of assets, ranging from loss of access to land,
access to shelter, access to finance, and economic problems are associated with food insecurity.
In relation to health-related problems, IDW experienced, spread of communicable diseases,
vulnerability to pandemics, infections disease, mosquito, injuries and wounds associated with
hard labor. Moreover, IDW face psychological problem associated with hunger and poor housing
conditions. Lastly, IDW mentioned out that social, economic, and linguistic differences are the
obstacles to engage in coping strategies. IDW also used daily laborer, prostitute, maid servant,
and household cleaner as the main coping strategy in the camps. Hence, I recommend local,
national, and global policies looking to address or avert must be created to address IDW
challenges in the camp.
