whereas; the iconological analysis is partially treated. The research combines three practical art
historical methods. First, the method of formalism is employed. The wall paintings of the church
are analyzed in terms of figural composition, arrangement of decorative forms, linear patterns
and motifs as well as types of color and their configuration in negative and positive spaces.
Formal analysis is followed by iconographic description (analysis). Iconographic analysis helps

is identified using this method. Visual narration of religious and secular paintings and symbolism
of representation will be dealt at depth through iconographic analysis.

Church. They constitute the primary source. In addition literary sources that are
contemporaneous to the production of the paintings which are found in the church or elsewhere
will be used as primary source. Oral information or tradition also will be an important source.
Properly evaluated and crosschecked oral sources are providing valuable information about the
paintings. Last but not least previous scholarly works will constitute the secondary source of the
research. Moţa Giyorgis
