Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess factors that affect the quality of teaching students with
hearing impairments in primary schools of Gondar City. To achieve this purpose a non
experimental research design specifically descriptive research design together with qualitative
and quantitative approaches was employed. Four primary schools, 4 principals, 17 special
needs education teachers and 37 students with hearing impairments were selected purposely
whereas, 10 parents of students with hearing Impairments and 113 regular class teachers were
selected using simple random sampling technique. The relevant data were collected through
questionnaire, interview and observation check- list. The data were analyzed using verbal
narration and descriptive statistics and interpreted corresponding with the number of
respondents. Based on the analysis, it was found that the majority of sampled teachers were not
using different types of teaching methodologies. In addition, the majority of sampled teachers
were new for teaching class where students with hearing impairments attend. Moreover,
majority of teachers did not receive sign language training and they were not working
collaboratively with their colleagues. Hence, the following recommendations were forwarded as
a solution for the identified problems. In service training on basic concepts of different types of
assessment and teaching methodologies should be given continuously for all teachers. Thus, Sign
language Professionals should design a programme to provide pre service and in-service
regular sign language training for all teachers who are teaching students with hearing
impairments in Gondar city. In addition, teachers should work collaboratively with their
colleagues.
