Abstract:
Introduction: Patients who perceive informed consent poorly feel helpless and unreliable in their
treatment because it restricts their autonomy and self-determination. In order to fill up the gaps left
by the earlier studies, I used a mixed-methods approach to further investigate characteristics.
Objective : The aim of this study was to assess perception of surgical informed consent and its
associated factors among adult surgical patients attending at public comprehensive specialized
hospitals in northwest Amhara,2023
Methods፡ An institutional-based a concurrent (quantitative cross-sectional and descriptive
qualitative approach qualitative) design was employed on 375 surgical patients.Systematic
sampling technique was used.Data were collected by using pre-tested structured interviewer
administered questionnaire and indepth interview for qualitative study. Epi data version 4.2 was
used for data entry and exported to SPSS version 26 for analysis and opencode 4.02 for qualitative
one . Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis was done to identify factors
associated with the outcome variable. Variables Odds ratio along with 95%confidence interval (CI)
were estimated to measure the strength of the association. Variables with P-value less than 0.05
were considered as statistical significant factors.
Results: A total of 375 Patients were participated in this study with the response rate of 100%
and In this study 194 (51.7%, 95% CI: 46.1- 56.5) of the patients had a poor perception of
informed consent for surgical procedures. inability to read and write (AOR = 12.89; 95% CI:
4.144-40.122) being single patients (AOR =4.7; 95% CI: 1.846-12.142), have poor patient
physician relationship (AOR = 12.06; 95% CI: 5.483-26.530) and have poor knowledge to surgical
informed consent (AOR 3.07; 95% CI: 1.284-7.365) were significantly associated with poor
perceptions towards informed consent..
Conclusion: In general this study revealed that the patient’s perception of surgical informed
consent was poor as compared to other literatures .Educational status, being single patients, have
poor patient physician relationship and have poor knowledge to surgical informed consent were
associated with poor perceptions of surgical informed consent for surgical procedures. Attention
should give to educational status of the patients when obtaining the informed consent and their
understanding / knowledge should be assess and strengthen patient physician relationship to
improve patient perception toward informed consent .
