Abstract:
ackground: In order to achieve favorable health results through healthcare services, the
implementation of technology-driven pharmaceutical supply chain management plays a pivotal
role. Nevertheless, despite efforts to introduce a technology-based logistic information system in
healthcare facilities, the management of health commodities remains inadequate.
objective: To assess the health commodity management information system utilization practice and
associated factors for pharmaceutical management at public health facility in Central Gondar Zone and
Gondar City administration.
Methods: A facility based cross sectional study design was carried out from 34 health facilities (25 healt
h center and 9 hospitals) which are selected purposively. The data were collected using self-administered
questionnaires, and observational checklist. Finally, the collected data were analyzed using SPSS versio
n 26. Descriptive, and Inferential statistics (chi-square) were used for analyzing the collected data. The
summary results were presented using tables, graphs, and charts.
Results:The study found that the utilization practices of health commodity management information
system in the studied facilities were satisfactory. All of the facilities use health commodity management
information system for the purposes of daily activity log/registration, daily activity reporting, and
summary reporting. The study revealed that the activity log system receiving activity and issuing
activity were mostly performed with mean score value of (3.8831±0.59) on daily basis by using health
commodity management information system in the health facilities. From activity log system, receiving
activity and issuing activity were mostly performed on daily basis by using health commodity
management information system in the health facilities with mean score value of 4.35±0.672, and
4.23±0.98, respectively. The study also indicated that, respondents having greater than five years
(10.970± 0.012) of total work experience were significantly associated (p<0.05) with good practice of re
ports generated by the systems. The technical factors (4.0154±0.33968) and data base characteristics (3.
8030±0.45214) was the major contributing factors for in HCMIS utilization practices. The study also
revealed, on the availability of necessary premises in the health facilities were about 68.82%. In conclusi
on the overall, the utilization practices of HCMIS were satisfactory. However, technical and organizatio
nal factors are still the major challenges. Therefore, to overcome these gaps and improve system utilizati
on practices, all the concerned bodies should work cooperatively and exert their maximum efforts.
