Background: Birth registration establishes the existence of a child under the law and provides the foundation for ensuring many of his/her rights and death registration provides information about the cause of death. Birth and death registration is one party of vital events data used for planning different health services for population.
Objective: To assess death and birth registration status and its associated factors among residents in Butajira town, Gurage Zone, SNNP, Ethiopia, 2023.
Method: Community-based cross-sectional quantitative study supplemented with a Qualitative study design was conducted from February to Mar 2023 among residents in Butajira town. A total of 412 residents were included, using a proportional allocation of simple random sampling. Data were collected using both an interviewer-administered questionnaire and an interview guide (for in-depth interviews) with purposive sampling methods for quantitative and qualitative parts respectively. Descriptive statistics, Bi-variable, and multivariable logistic regression analysis were performed. Adjusted odds ratios with corresponding 95% confidence intervals were used and thematic analysis was made of qualitative data to triangulate with the quantitative.
Result: The study revealed that birth registration status was only 132(32%) and 19(4.6%) for death registration status were found. The factors found to be significantly associated with birth registration include being Female (AOR =2.29: 95% CI: 1.23, 4.25), having favorable Attitude (AOR = 4.88: 95% CI: 2.75, 8.65), being Knowledgeable (AOR = 3.70: 95% CI: 1.94, 7.05), higher level education (AOR = 2.28: 95% CI: 1.31, 6.51), being married (AOR = 2.87: 95% CI: 1.17, 6.99), being muslim (AOR = 4.32: 95% CI: 2.16, 8.63), being delivery in health facility (AOR = 3.27: 95% CI: 1.37, 7.79).
Conclusion: Death and birth registration status was found low. Attitude, Knowledge, sex, religion, place of delivery, education, and marital status were significantly associated with birth registration. This study suggests raising community awareness and improving knowledge and attitude helps to increase birth and death registeration status. |
