Postoperative Pulmonary Complication and Associated Factors among Adult Patients Undergone Abdominal Surgery at University Of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia, In 2021

Abstract

Introduction: pulmonary complications are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. It is one of the most prevalent postoperative complications and it is the most significant independent 30-day mortality determinant and impact long-term clinical outcomes adversely. Objective: The main aim of this study was to assess postoperative pulmonary complication and associated risk factors of among adult patients undergone abdominal surgery in University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia, in 2021. Methods: Institutional based retrospective cross sectional chart review will be conducted among patients who under gone abdominal surgery at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital from 2017 to 2020. The study includes 422 samples and Systematic random sampling method was used to select study participants. Results; the overall prevalence of postoperative pulmonary complication was 21.1 % Conclusion and recommendation Post-operative pulmonary complications were common and were associated with increased morbidity and mortality and adversely affected clinical outcomes of patients. Implement risk assessment tools to identify high risk patients for ppc and to improve access to acute care services because timely management of ppc is the main predictor for the patient’s length of hospital stay and further complication.
