Abstract:
Introduction: Patient satisfaction is a growing concern in all aspects of health care, and
as the voice of a client, it is a measure of quality of care. The invasiveness of the surgical
procedure, the anesthesia, and the technology used, coupled with the complexities of
teamwork and communication, make the perioperative period a high risk time for surgical
patient. Thus assessment of patient satisfaction is essential when reviewing the quality
of care and integral to the management of health care systems.
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine patients’ satisfaction and associated
factors towards surgical service among patients undergoing surgery at western Amhara
referral hospitals, North West Ethiopia, 2020
Method: Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted among 422 patients who
were undergoing surgery from February 25- April 5, 2020. Systematic random sampling
technique was used to select the representative samples. Data were collected through
interviewer administered questioner with chart review. Binary logistic regression model
was fitted to identify determinants of patient satisfaction with surgical service. Variables
with “P-value” less than 0.2 in the bivariable analysis were entered into multi variable
logistic regressions. In multivariable logistic regressions “P-values” ? 0.05 were
considered statistically significant and adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence interval
was used to determine the strength of association.
Result: A total of 422 participants were included in the study. Two hundred ninety (68.7%)
of the participants were satisfied with surgical service. Age >58 years [AOR=3.80, 95%CI
(1.53-9.46)], 47-58years [AOR= 2.47, 95%CI (1.07-5.71)], no formal education [AOR=2.73,
95%CI (1.18-6.32)], primary school education [AOR=3.89, 95%CI (1.65-9.17)] and
secondary school [AOR=3.37, 95%CI (1.38-8.23)], no history of previous surgical
admission [AOR=2.09, 95%CI (1.07-4.08)], length of stay in the hospital <7days
[AOR=2.13,95%CI(1.21-3.75)] and elective admission for surgery [AOR=1.75, 95%CI (1.032.99)]
were
significantly
associated
with
patient
satisfaction
with
surgical
service.
Conclusion
and
recommendation:
Patients satisfaction towards surgical service was
relatively low. Though it needs more effort for further improvement of quality of care
through focused intervention on major contributors’ of patient satisfaction.
