Background: Intestinal obstruction
Objectives: To assess surgical management outcome and associated factors of
intestinal obstruction among surgically treated patients at University of Gondar
comprehensive specialized Hospital, Gondar, 2017.
Methods: Hospital based cross sectional study was conducted among patients who were
surgically treated for IO during the last 4 years at the UGCSH from January 2013 Up to
December 2016. Three hundred fourteen
Result: Among 314 randomly selected charts, 310
Conclusion: Favorable surgical management outcome was relatively high as compared
to other findings. The majority of patients had favorable surgical management outcomes
of IO. Determinant factors that positively associated with surgical management outcome
of intestinal obstruction were sex, duration of illness and length of hospital stay. History of
abdominal surgery was a factor that negatively associated with surgical management
outcome of intestinal obstruction. Early diagnosis, adequate preoperative and proper
post-operative care shall be done.
