INTRODUCTION: Post-operative pain is a common patient problem after surgical procedure. Uncontrolled post-operative pain reduces physical, social and overall recoveryof the patient.Effective pain management requires precise knowledge and practice.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was toassess Knowledge, practice and associated factors toward postoperative pain management among nurses working in Amhara regional referral hospitals northwest Ethiopia 2019.
METHODS:An institution based cross-sectional study was conducted among 437 nurses working in Amhara referral hospitals from March 8 to April 23, 2019. Nurses who are working in the surgical track was included in the study. Data was verified, coded and entered to Epi info Software version 7 and then it was exported and analyzed by SPSS version 20 Software. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analysis was made to identify variable having a significant association with the dependent variables. Descriptive statistics was used to summarize data.
RESULT: A total of 405Nurses participated in this study witha response rate of
92.6%.Out of this participants176 (43.46%) (39.3 -48.4)had good Knowledgeand193 (47.65 %) 95%CI (42.5 -52.8) had good practice in regard to postoperative pain management. Nurse’s level of education was positively associated with level of knowledge [(AOR=7.125 95%CI (2.525-20.107) and work expriance AOR=2.581(1.758
,11.938)].having good knowledge among nurses MSC and 5-10 years work exprince had almost seven and three times more knowledgeable than counterparts.whereas nursing workload, knowledge and training was significantly associated with level of practice by [AOR=1.934(1.233-3.033)] AOR=2.019(1.334, 3.057] and AOR=1.877(1.259, 2.80) respectively. the odds of having good practice among nurses who had no workload was nearly two times practicing as compared to counterparts.
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION:in this finding,the overall knowledge and practice of nurses working in the postoperative area were found to be poor.and This study recommends,nurse’s leader Shall give periodic staff training,and nurses Update their knowledge and practice to deliver standardized nursing care.
