dc.description.abstract ABSTRACT Introduction: Varieties of musculoskeletal disorders have been associated with diabetes mellitus and become public health problem. However, there are evidences on the subject area they are skewed to developed countries. To our knowledge, only two studies were done in Ethiopia, but some major independent factors of musculoskeletal disorders like retinopathy and neuropathy, were not addressed. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and associated factors of musculoskeletal disorders among diabetic patients in Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Bahir Dar, Northwest Ethiopia, 2020. Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted from June 1st - July 30th, 2020 in Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital. Statistical analysis had performed using SPSS 20 version statistical software. A systematic sampling technique was used for the selection of 413 patients with DM. Interview administered questionnaire, chart review and physical examination has been conducted to collect the data. Descriptive statistics were conducted to summarize patient’s information and to determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the association between dependent and independent variables. Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with p-value <0.05 with 95% CI was considered statistically significant. Result: The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among adult diabetic patients was 24% with 95% CI (19.9, 28.4). Female gender (AOR=1.8; 95% CI (1.003-3.299)), age above 49 years (AOR=9.7; 95 % CI (4.794-19.556)), more than 10 years of diabetes (AOR=15.6, 95 % CI (6.02-40.4)), and retinopathy (AOR=1.9; 95 % CI (1,005-3,845)) were significantly associated with musculoskeletal disorders among adult diabetic patients. Conclusion: The prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders was high in the diabetic population of Northwestern Ethiopia. Health care professionals should be alert about those disorders whenever the diabetic patients come to the clinic. Age, sex, duration of diabetes mellitus, and retinopathy were significantly associated with musculoskeletal disorders among adult diabetic patients.
