Abstract
Background carpal tunnelsyndrome has been defined as a complex of symptoms (i.e., pain,
numbness, or tingling on the anterior surface of the index, middle, or radial half of the ring
finger, resulting from compression of the median nerve at the carpal tunnel formed by the carpal
bones and the transverse ligament.Construction is a particularly high risk industry for CTS and
other upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders.It represents a leading cause of upper extremity
musculoskeletal disorders, which are among the most significant and costly health problems
occurring in the working population worldwide
Objective: -To assess the prevalence and associated factors carpal tunnel syndrome among
construction workers working in Gondar town Amhara Ethiopia 2021.
Methods and materials:-Institutional based cross sectional study design was conducted
among333construction workers with Stratified sampling technique was used to recruit study
Participants from april1to30 .Data collection was conducted by face- to-face interview and
physical examination(Durkan’s, compression test,flexion and compression test,Phalen’s test, and
Tinel’s test)were done.The data was entered in EPI data and analyzed using spssverion 20
Result:A total of 333 study Participants were incorporated in this study with a response rate of
95.7%. Theoverall Prevalencewas11.7% % (95%CI 8.4-15), cigarette smoker [AOR: ] 0.23(0.970.56)and
Workers who had Experience more than 5years [AOR)0.12(0.05-0.27%)Respectively
were significantly associated with carpal tunnel syndrome.
Conclusions; the prevalence of Carpal tunnel syndrome in Gondar town construction workers
was high. Cigarette Smoking, Duration of employment (Experience) were predictors for Carpal
tunnel syndrome.
