Abstract
Background:Musculoskeletaldisordersarepainorinjuriesinthebody’sjoints,
ligaments,muscles,nerves,tendons,andstructuresthatsupportlimbs,neckand
back.Theyarecalledwork-relatediftheyoccurorarecausedbytheworkplace
environment.
Objective:Themainobjectiveofthisstudywastoassesstheprevalenceand
associatedfactorsofworkrelatedmusculoskeletaldisordersamongcleanersof
healthinstitutionsinGondartown.
Method:Aninstitutionalbasedcross-sectionalstudywasconducted,from Aprilto
May2016inallhealthinstitutionsofGondartown,NorthwestEthiopia.Atotalof253
participantswereincludedwithnon-responserateof4.3%.Traineddatacollectors
administered a face-to-face interview.Descriptive statistics was performed to
describethedatainpercentageandmean.Todeterminethepredictorvariables,
bivariateandmultivariablelogisticregressionweredone.Variableshavingp-value<
0.05wereconsideredasstatisticallysignificant.
Results:Outofthetotal201(83.1%)respondentsreportedthattheyhadpaininat
leastoneofthebodypartsintheprevious12months.Oftheninebodyparts
examined,neck(76%),upperback(40.5%)andlowerback(45%)werethemost
frequentlybodypartsreportedtoexhibitpain.Jobstatusandstaticworkhabitwere
identifiedasfactorsassociatedwithworkrelatedmusculoskeletaldisorders.
Conclusionandrecommendation:cleanersinhealthinstitutionsofGondartownhad
highprevalenceofworkrelatedmusculoskeletaldisorders.Jobstatusandstatic
workhabitwerethesignificantassociatedfactors.Attentionshouldbegivenbythe
managementandthegovernmentinmodifyingtheworkenvironmentofcleanersto
adjusttheworkhabitofcleanerssothatpreventingmusculoskeletaldisorders.
