recall, producing and understanding language, solving problem, and making decisions. Deficit in
cognitive impairment is among the more serious of the sequalae of stroke, delaying and often
seriously compromising attempts at rehabilitation. Post stroke cognitive impairment is associated
with impaired activities of daily living, which in turn may result in greater utilization of
healthcare services and reduced capacity for independent living and reduction in functional
performance.
Objective: - To assess the prevalence and associated factors of cognitive impairment among
stroke survivors at comprehensive specialized hospitals in Amhara region Ethiopia 2022.
Methods: - Institutional based cross sectional study design was conducted from April to June .
All stroke survivors who were attended at selected comprehensive specialized hospital during the
study period were included. Data was collected by interviewing the participants using a
structured questionnaire and medical chart review through trained data collectors. Participants
were selected through systematic random Sampling technique. Cognitive impairment was
measured using Montreal cognitive assessment basic. Data was analyzed using descriptive
statistics, binary and multivariate logistic regression methods. AOR with P value <0.05 with
95% CI was considered statistically significant.
Result. A total of 422 stroke survivors were included in this study. The overall prevalence of
cognitive impairment among stroke survivors was 58.3% (95% CI 53.4%- 63.0%).old age (AOR;
7.115,CI(4.403-11.451)),beinghypertensive(AOR;7.517,CI(3.457-16.346)),time to hospital
hospital(AOR;4.328,CI(1.490-12.054))and being illiterate(AOR;5.256,CI(4.429-18.640)) were
found significant factors.
Conclusion: Cognitive impairment is relatively common among stroke survivors in this study,
More than half of stroke survivors attended at comprehensive specialized hospitals in Amhara
region during the study period were found to present with cognitive impairment
