dc.description.abstract Abstract Introduction: It is mandatory for the clinicians to understand the events occurring in the PICU and outcome of mechanically ventilated children for improving the quality of care of the critically ill child. There are a lot of factors which are associated with increased magnitude of mortality. Therefore this study will assess indications for MV, clinical characteristics of patients, out come and associated factors so as to identify factors causing unfavourable outcome, to improve clinical practices and to suggest further studies. Objective: The main objective of this study is to assess the characteristics, outcome and associated factors of mechanically ventilated pediatrics patients in University of Gondar hospital, North West Ethiopia admitted from June 1,2015- September 30,2021. Methods : Institution based retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 115 children admitted and mechanically ventilated at PICU. Structured Questionnaire was used to collect data which was checked for completeness, coded manually, entered to Epi info version 7.2 and exported to SPSS version 20 for data cleaning and analysis. Both descriptive and analytical statistical procedures were utilized. Descriptive statistics like percentage, mean, median and standard deviation were used for the presentation of characteristics of mechanically ventilated patients.Binary logistic regression analysis was carried out to see the effect of each independent variable on the dependent variable. Result: The commonest reason for initiation of MV were neurologic (coma) 41(35.7%). Malignancy was the commonest comorbidity and coexisted in 20(17.4%) . The preferred weaning method was CPAP alone(50%).SIMV was the frequently used mode (79.1%). Conclusion and recommendation: The mortality rate of mechanically vent ilated pediatric patients in UOG Hospital was 54. 8%. The commonest cause of death was ARDS. Commonly used ventilator mode was SIMV and ETT was the only way to access the airway. SAM,extubation during working day night time, extubation during weekend night time and duration of PICU stay were significant predictors of PICU mortality.
