Abstract
Introduction: Glaucoma is a main blinding condition which, predispose patients
to co morbid common mental disorders. Ethiopia in general and in the current
study area in particular the prevalence of common mental disorders among
glaucoma patients is not well studied. Therefore, this study will be an input and
paramount importance to implement an integrated approach intervention in this
population.
Objective: The aim of the study to assess prevalence of common mental
disorders and associated factors among adults with glaucoma attending
University of Gondar comprehensive specialized hospital tertiary eye care and
training center, North west Ethiopia ,2020.
Method: Institution based Cross-sectional study was conducted on 495
glaucoma patient from June to August, 2020. Study participants were selected by
systematic random sampling from the glaucoma clinic. Data were collected
through face to face interview and chart review. Study subjects who scored ?11
from SRQ-20 were considered as having common mental disorders. Bivariable
and multivariable logistic regression analysis with 95% CI were done and
variables with P<0.05 in the final model were identified as independent factors
significantly associated with common mental disorders.
Result: Four hundred sixty eight patients were included in our study with
response rate of 94.54%. The prevalence of common mental disorders was
found to be 29.5 %. Female sex, less than 1200 birr average monthly income,
poor level of social support, moderate and high risk alcohol use, presence of
chronic medical illness, receiving both drug and surgical treatment and presence
of systemic carbonic anhydrase were significantly associated with increased level
of common mental disorders.
Conclusion and recommendation: the prevalence of common mental disorders
among adult glaucoma patient relatively higher compared to other studies across
Africa in which 29.5 % found have co morbid common mental disorders. Better to
integrate psychosocial care into current treatment of patients with glaucoma.
