ABSTRACT
Background: Oligohydramnios is a condition where the liquor aminii is deficient in amount to the
extent of less than 200 ml at term. Sonographically, it is defined when the maximum vertical pocket
of liquor is less than 2 cm or when amniotic fluid index (AFI) is less than 5 cm. complicates 0.55%
of pregnancies. It is associated with adverse perinatal outcomes like, intrauterine growth
restriction, perinatal death, cord compression and non-reassuring fetal condition in labor with
associated operative interventions, neonatal admission and congenital anomaly.
Objective: To assess magnitude and associated factors of adverse perinatal outcome among
women with 3
rd
trimester oligohydramnios at university of Gondar comprehensive specialized
hospital, North west Ethiopia
Methods: Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted From April to September 2021
with sample size of 264 participants. All women with 3
rd
trimester oligohydramnios who meet the
inclusion criteria were included in the study. Pre-tested semi- structured questionnaire was used
for data collection by face-to-face interview and record review methods. Collected data was
checked for completeness, clarity then coded and entered using Epi data version 4.6.0.2 exported
to STATA version 14.1 and analyzed.
Result: The rate of adverse perinatal outcome was found to be 46.59% (95%CI, 40.53-52.65%)
In multivariable logistic regression Nulliparity (AOR= 2.224, 95%CI [1.209-4.15]), presence of
hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (AOR=4.933, 95%CI [2.015-12.077]) and presence of
intrauterine growth restriction (AOR=8.395, 95%CI [3.496-20.16]) were found to be predictors of
adverse perinatal outcome.
Conclusion: Mothers with oligohydramnios in 3
rd
trimester are significantly at increased risk of
developing adverse perinatal outcome in their babies. The presence of HDP, IUGR and being
nulliparous were found to be predictors of developing adverse perinatal outcome in women with
3
rd
trimester oligohydramnios. So, the presence of this factors will help in patient counseling and
strict labor follow-up and early preparation for detection of complications and timely management.
