ABSTRACT
Background: Breech deliveries have perinatal mortality that is two to four-fold higher
than cephalic deliveries. And describing perinatal outcomes of breech deliveries is
important in developing countries like Ethiopia in which there are limited studies and
contradicting results are available previously.
Objective: This study is aimed to determine the perinatal outcomes and predictors of
breech delivery at the University of Gondar comprehensive specialized hospital.
Method: An institutional based cross- sectional study was conducted from April 2021
to September 2021 at the University of Gondar comprehensive specialized hospital
with sample size of 197 and all women with breech delivery during the study period
were included. A structured questioner was utilized to address the perinatal outcome
as well as its predictors, attributed to breech delivery. Epi-Data version 4.6.0.2 and
SPSS version 20 statistical software were used for data entry and analysis,
respectively. Bivariable and multivariable binary logistic regression analysis were
done to see the strength of association and determine independent predictor of
perinatal outcome. Variables with p. value below 0.05 was considered as a significant
predictor of poor perinatal outcomes.
Result: Out of 197 breech deliveries during the study period 43 had poor perinatal
outcomes (12 were dead and 31 admissions to neonatal ICU) which makes the
perinatal mortality rate of 66/1000 breach deliveries. Abruptio placenta, cord prolapse
and RH isoimmunization were incriminated in 3(25%), 2(16.67%), 1(8.33%) IFD
deaths, respectively and unidentified in 6 (50%) of the deaths. low birth weight (AOR
(Adjusted Odds Ratio): 3.87, 95% CI: 1.26, 11.90) and preterm births (AOR: 4.07, 95%
CI: 1.40, 11.85) were significantly associated with bad perinatal outcome.
Conclusion and Recommendation: The prevalence of poor perinatal outcomes was
higher. Therefore, the health sector policy maker, other governmental and nongovernmental
organization
should
be
engaged
in
measures
to
reduce
preterm
births
and
low
birth
weight
