Abstract
Background: Informed consent is a legal doctrine in medical practice, derived from the ethical
principle of respect for autonomy. There are many studies regarding informed consent, but only
few studies performed to assess adult patient抯 knowledge and perception of surgical informed
consent and associated factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study will be to assess knowledge
and perception of surgical informed consent and associated factors among adult surgical obstetric
and gynecologic patients in Gondar University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Northwest
Ethiopia, 2021/2022.
Methods: An institution-based cross-sectional study design was conducted among 382 adult
surgical obstetric and gynecologic patients at the University of Gondar comprehensive
specialized hospital. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select study
participants. Data was collected by using a structured questionnaire and checklist and was
entered into epi-data version 4.6 then exported to SPSS version 22 for data cleansing and
analysis. Bi-variable and multivariable logistic regression were employed to identify factors
associated with knowledge and perceptions of patients on surgical informed consent.
Results: Three hundred eighty two patients were included in this study with a 100% overall
response rate, Patients age ranged from 18 to 72 years with a mean age of 29.90 years (
