Abstract:
Introduction: Newborn care is a vital tool for proper growth of neonate and their healthy life.Millennium Development Goal-4 for child survival cannot be met without substantial reductions in neonatal mortality.Therefore, knowing the practice and associated factors of new born care will provide a crucial support for efforts and strategies aimed to born a healthy neonatesand for prevention and control diseases associated with newborn care in the community level.
Objective:The aim of this study is to assess the newborn care practiceand associated factorsamong mothers who gave birth within one year periodin Dangur district, North West Ethiopia, 2015.
Method: A community based cross-sectional study wasutilizedamong women who gave birth within one year in the study period in Dangur district, from March 12 to April 12/2015. A multi stage sampling technique was used and total of 806 study participant were selected by used single population proportion formula.Data were collected by 16 trained data collectors using structured and unstructured questionnaires. A questionnaire was pre-tested. Data were checked for completeness and accuracy by the principal investigators and itwas entered to EPI info version 3.5.3 and exported to SPSS version 20 for analysis.Odd ratio was computed to assess the strength of association with the 95% CI.
Result: The prevalence ofgood new born care practice was found to be 59.7%.Source of information (AOR=2.51: CI (3.10, 4.62), Birth preparation (AOR=1.70: CI (1.04, 3.5).Forest (AOR=3.42 95% CI: 1.02-11.42) and plan where to deliver (AOR=1.94 95% CI: 1.4-5.00) were significantly associated with good newborn care practice.
Conclusion and/recommendation:In the study area the good new born care practice found to be poor. Plan where to deliver, arrange where to deliver, source of information and birth preparation about newborn care practice important determinants of good new born practice were. Hence improving the health service and health education can improve the of good new born care practice.
