Abstract
Introduction: Emergency Department is a multiple functional unit at any level of a
health facility. Mortality in the emergency department has contributed to 15-16 % of all
hospital deaths in the world. As per the investigator’s knowledge the prevalence of
mortality and its associated factors in the emergency department is not well studied in
Ethiopia.
Objective: To assess the prevalence of mortality and its associated factors among
adult patients admitted in emergency department at Northwest Amhara Comprehensive
Specialized Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia 2022.
Methods: An institution-based retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted
among adult emergency department patients admitted at Northwest Amhara
Comprehensive Specialized Hospitals, from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021. A
systematic random sampling technique was used to select 567 participants. Data were
extracted from medical records. Data were entered into EPi-info version 7.2. software
and exported to statistical package for social science software version 25 for analysis.
Descriptive statistics was used for summarized. Bivariable and multivariable logistic
regression models were used for analysis. Adjusted odds ratio with 95%confidence
interval and variables with a P-value<0.05 was considered to be statistically significant
with mortality in the emergency department.
Results: The prevalence of mortality in adult emergency department patients was found
to be 4.6%(95%CI:3,6.6). Being male AOR=3.25(95%CI:1.15,9.14), rural resident
AOR=3.91(95%CI:1.29,11.76), private source of referral AOR=5.39(1.69,17.16), loss of
consciousness AOR=5.23(95%CI:2.01,13.57), patients had comorbidity illness
AOR=4.46(95%CI:1.70,11.61), were significantly associated with mortality in the
emergency department.
Conclusion and recommendation: The prevalence of mortality in the emergency
department in the current finding is high compare to previous study conducted in
Ethiopia. Being male, rural residency, private source of referral, loss of consciousness
and comorbidity illness were factors associated with mortality in emergency department.
Therefore, awareness creation on factors that increased mortality in the emergency
department is important
