Abstract
Background: Performance appraisal is a mechanism for regularly monitoring and
delivering feedback to workers on their performance against pre-determined standards, with
the results of the appraisal being utilized as a foundation for administrative decisions and
developmental objectives. The impact of performance appraisal in health care settings has
not received as much attention. There are a number of complaints about the lack of
performance standard/criteria, ongoing performance feedback, trained appraisers, and fair
performance ratings during performance appraisal period and also there is limited data to
identify the perception towards performance appraisal and associated factors among health
professional in the study area
Objective: To assess Perception towards performance appraisal practice and associated
factors among health professionals in central Gondar zone primary hospitals
Method and materials: An Institution based cross-sectional study concurrent with
qualitative approach was conducted from Jan 1 to Aug 31, 2022 among 422 health
professionals working in the central Gondar zone primary hospitals. Participants were
selected using simple random sampling. Structured, pretested questionnaires and
interviews were used to collect data. The collected data was coded and entered to Epi-data
3.1 and then exported to Stata version 14 statistical packages for analysis. Both bivariable
and multivariable logistic regression model were used to identify associated factors. In a
multivariable analysis variable having a p-value < 0.05 with 95% CI in logistic regression
model was considered as independent associated factors
Results: Good perception towards performance appraisal among study participants was
found to be 47.63 %( 95%CI; 42.8%-52.4%). reward system [(AOR: 5.09 (95%CI: (2.82 –
9.19)], method of assessment [AOR: 2.05 (95% CI: (1.04 – 4.02)], management
commitment [AOR: 2.18 (95% CI: (1.09– 4.36)], feedback [AOR: 2.03 (95% CI: (1.03–
3.99)], training [AOR: 2.24 (95% CI: (1.08– 4.64)] and empoyee engagement [(AOR: 2.17
(95%CI: (1.02– 4.61)] were associated with health professional perception
Conclusion and recommendation: Hospital managements should be committed and
provide immediate formal feedback and training on performance appraisal for health
professionals.
