Abstract
Introduction: Hypertension is a prevalent and often asymptomatic chronic disease and
the leading cause of global burden of the population and it become a common and
demanding chronic disease that has a wide effect on health related quality of life on
physical, psychological, social and environmental domain. Therefore it is important to
assess the impact of the disease from patients’ perspective and identify factors affect
health-related quality of life of patients with and without hypertension.
Objective: - The objective of this study was to assess the health-related quality of life
and associated factors among adults with and without hypertension in University of
Gondar comprehensive specialized hospital and Gondar town, Northwest Ethiopia
2018.
Methods: - Comparative cross-sectional study was conducted at University of Gondar
comprehensive specialized hospital and Gondar town population from March to April
2018. A total of 421 adult participants from these 107 hypertensive patients were
selected from adult chronic follow up clinic by using systematic random sampling
technique and 321 non hypertensive groups from Gondar town. World health
organization-quality of life short version questionnaires was used to assess quality of
life. The data was entered into Epi-info 7 and analysed with SPSS version 20. Summary
statstics, simple and multiple linear regression analysis were performed.
Result: A total of 421 study participants were included in the study. The quality of life of
hypertension patient score for the physical, psychological, social and environmental
domain was 63, 59, 51, and 60 respectively. For non hypertensive were 66, 63, 55, and
67 respectively. Factors associated with domains were age, educational status, wealth
index, hypertensive related complication, blood pressure, exercise, and alcohol.
Conclusion and recommendation: This study show health related quality of life of
hypertensive patients is lower than non hypertensive. Factors affecting health related
quality of life were age, body mass index; alcohol and educational level were common
for both group. Higher officials shall plan to screening of hypertension at the community.
